On December 25th, The Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology (CIFST) issued a Group Standard for plant-based meat products (T/CIFST 001-2020), aiming to fill the gaps in standards, meet the market demand and guide the standardized development of the industry. The Group Standard will be implemented starting June 25th, 2021.
The Group Standard clearly defines plant-based meat products, raw materials, and cooked products. It also stipulates the basic requirements, technical requirements, inspection and decision rules, labels, markings, packaging, storage, and transportation of plant-based meat products. For instance, the product category name shall be clearly marked near the product name and the product label shall contain specific wording that distinguishes the products from animal meat products.
